The pre-primary level includes structures which prepare children for entering compulsory schooling. In all cantons, children are entitled to benefit from pre-school teaching for between one and three years before starting compulsory education. The entry age depends on the enrolment age for compulsory education and varies considerably from canton to canton. In most cantons, it is set at five years.
