  • development of software, not associated with publishing, see 621000
  • translation or adaptation of non-customised software for a particular market on a fee or contract basis, see 621000

  • use of published software for provision of financial and insurance activities, see section L

Software development and IT services fall under Section K (Telecommunications, Computer, and Information Service Activities), while the publishing of content, including books, newspapers, magazines, and digital media, is classified in Section J (Publishing, Broadcasting, and Content Production and Distribution). However, if a unit both develops and publishes its software, it should be classified under software publishing within Section J.

For licensing activities, choose Section 58 if the business licenses copyrighted works (such as books, software, music, or games), typically involving content they created or published. Choose Section 77 if the business licenses industrial property (such as patents, trademarks, or franchise rights) without being involved in publishing or content creation.
